If you’ve ever thought about teaching, but don’t want the rigid structure of a classroom and prefer a smaller audience, tutoring may be for you. It’s a tough job that requires certain soft and hard skills. If you’d like to find out more about intensive tutoring, you’ve come to the right place.

In episode 10 of the Life in Private Staffing podcast, our host Phillipa Smith talks to Jemma Zoe Smith, Founder of The Education Hotel. Jemma is an expert tutor with many happy clients from all around the world. She is the Director at The Education Hotel, which offers tutoring services in various niches, as well as tutoring in her own capacity.

Tutoring may not be a career many people think about after university, but it can be an incredibly fulfilling job that takes you to many different places, helping a variety of families with their academic plans. Of course, you have to be an excellent communicator and understand study methods and education.

Jemma didn’t always know that she wanted to be a tutor. In fact, she initially completed an MSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In this podcast episode, you’ll hear all about how she pivoted her career from a science discipline to tutoring students to help them get into private schools and universities.

She has worked as a residential tutor around the world and her holiday bookings are made years in advance. If you’re interested in tutoring, it’s crucial you listen to what she has to say. Since she can no longer accommodate all tutoring bookings herself, she decided to launch The Education Hotel in 2019.

The boutique tuition agency supports students aged between 6 and 18 throughout the world. They have a team of expert tutors who they work with to support them to achieve their academic goals, whether that is to increase their grades or help them get into a top private school or university.

They offer one-on-one tuition, which gives the student a personalised support team, either online or in person. They also have holiday courses to supplement their one-on-one tuition. The Education Hotel helps with advice, assessments, coaching, and mentoring to ensure that students are able to fully reach their potential and meet the criteria for top schools and universities.

In our latest podcast, you’ll find out all about Jemma’s travels to various countries where she tutored students of different ages to help them reach their goals in academia. She’s done residential tutoring as well as online tutoring for a number of families who have gone on to do great things through her service.

It’s a fascinating discussion where you’ll learn about the ins and outs of intensive tutoring. According to Jemma, it’s a unique experience where the focus is on guiding the student on how to study the material, rather than teaching them the exact material. There are many times when she will find different ways to teach her students how to study rather than what to study.

When it comes to recruiting for The Education Hotel, there is a five-step process where Jemma tests candidates to find out if they meet the criteria. It’s important to her that people wanting to enter the tutoring market as employees understand that you have to balance parent demands and actual tutoring. Tutors don’t often get to choose daytime hours and the job can be quite demanding. In other words, you have to love tutoring as much as Jemma does.

If you’d like to find out more about tutoring, whether it’s international residential tutoring or intensive one-on-one online local tutoring you’re interested in, feel free to contact Jemma Zoe Smith by connecting with her on LinkedIn.
